There is more to Nevada than Las Vegas.
My visit to the Silver State started after flying into Reno. After picking up a rental car I embarked upon a three-day road trip across Reno-Tahoe to discover Nevada’s oldest towns.
Anchored by the state capital of Carson City, the region sits on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near magnificent Lake Tahoe.
I first stopped in Virginia City, a former mining town settled in 1859. In its heyday, it had one of the largest populations anywhere in the Old West. It is estimated that about $20 billion in gold and silver was extracted from mines in and around here. ....

Nevada State Museum asking public's help naming taxidermy animals

The Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas is looking for help naming six of its new residents. The museum recently acquired six new taxidermy animals that the Friends of the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas purchased earlier this year. Needing names are a bear, ringtail cat, porcupine, American river otter, badger, and kit fox. Only visitors to the museum can cast their ballot, available through June 27. The museum is open from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m.. ....

Farmers market moves locations this year
The Carson Farmers Market will begin Saturday, June 5 and run every Saturday through the last weekend in September from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Notable Women of Eagle Valley
The Carson City Historical Society will open the exhibit, Notable Women of Eagle Valley on Saturday, June 5, from 1- 3 p.m. in the Carriage House, 1207 N. Carson St. The Carriage House is located directly behind the Foreman-Roberts House. Many notable women are featured in the exhibit with the artwork done by local artists. The event is free and open to the public. ....
