This joint Fredericksburg City Government and City Schools effort meets City Council s sustainability commitments by working to increase energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions while providing cost savings to tax payers. In December 2019, City Council adopted the 100% Renewable Energy Resolution and committed to the goal of powering municipal operations with 100% renewable energy by 2035, or earlier. At that time, Council endorsed the efforts of City Schools and the City Government to pursue solar energy for public buildings. Additionally, they encouraged partnership ....
As Fredericksburg officials on Tuesday discussed the report issued by the Police Executive Research Forum on protests last May 31 through June 2 in the city, Police Chief Brian Layton sat quietly the entire time. The PERF report, which was released Feb. 4, criticized Laytonâs department for its deployment of chemical agents on protesters on two separate occasions on May 31 without sufficient notice. It also noted other actions by police that did not comply with department policy. Layton issued a statement after the report was released last week noting that his department had already made some changes and would review the PERF recommendations âto assess additional improvements.â On Tuesday night, he appeared on video with the City Council for a work session and a regular session, but never spoke. ....

The Free Lance-Star Since late spring, a group of Fredericksburg protesters have requested the city âdefund the police,â or redirect resources to crime prevention rather than law enforcement. City Council has taken the opposite approach. Members voted unanimously Tuesday night to amend the budget to provide additional resources to law enforcement and court security personnel. The amendment provides all sworn law enforcement, communications and sheriff personnel a $3,500 increase in annual salary. The starting pay for a new officer will go from $46,518 to $50,018. City Manager Tim Baroody has also been directed to include a proposal in next yearâs recommended budget to increase the allowances for post-retirement health insurance benefits for public safety personnel. ....
