Several local schools have appeared on the stateâs School Outbreak report, while officials in Howell are confident things are getting better and they can continue in-person learning.
In a letter (posted below) to families of students in Howell Public Schools, Superintendent Erin MacGregor states that two schools are appearing on this weekâs Michigan Department of Health and Human Services School Outbreak Report. An outbreak in an educational setting is two or more cases linked by time and place. Howell High School will appear three times, affecting six students, with each instance being limited to the original case of a student testing positive and one additional case of another student that was linked. Hutchings Elementary also appears in the report for a case involving a staff member who tested positive, with 3 students who were identified as close contacts testing posi ....

The data was collected on Thursday, May 6, and includes preschools and daycares in those buildings
Last week, the state reported 197 infections in new outbreaks at 65 K-12 school buildings.
The biggest new outbreaks involves 12 students on the track team at Fulton Middle School in Gratiot County; nine students at West Middle School in Rochester Hills, and eight students and staff at St. Stephen Catholic School in New Boston, which is part of metro Detroit. ....

Livingston County schools seeing increase in COVID-19 cases

As the state has seen a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, schools have been seeing similar trends.
Some schools in Livingston County have seen surges in cases, but school leaders believe the likelihood of in-school transmission is still low.
We haven t seen transmission in schools, Pinckney Superintendent Rick Todd said. It could happen, but we re not seeing that as a root cause. What we re seeing are interactions without protocols where you re seeing that mass spread.
The Detroit Free Press reported on March 17 that the largest portion of new COVID-19 cases in Michigan was school-age children. Natasha Radke, public information officer for the Livingston County Health Department, confirmed the county has seen an uptick in cases among children. She said there have been club- and sports-related cases, including the B.1.1.7 variant, which is more contagious and could be causing the increase in school outbreaks. ....
