Collins Okeke: Growing demand for a democratic system of local government in Nigeria

The Local Government is the closest level of government to the people in Nigeria. The Nigerian Constitution in the Fourth Schedule lists out the many functions of local governments, some of which include; construction and maintenance of roads, streets, street lightings, drains, public highways, parks, markets, gardens, open spaces, amongst others. These functions show that local governments are essential to the advancement of the welfare of the people. Unfortunately, the Local Government System is often abused and neglected by States. The result is that the impact of local governments is not felt by the people.
The Nigerian Constitution provides for a Democratically Elected Local Government Council. Abuja-based constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), has faulted and dismissed as pedestrian, all the arguments put forward by the federal government in defence of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami.
In a statement he issued Friday night, Ozekhome argued that even though Pantami committed the alleged terrorist acts before the enactment of the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act 2013, he could be prosecuted under Section 46 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004 (EFCC Act). ....

Ozekhome: Pantami Can Be Prosecuted for Terrorism

Lagos lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has faulted the federal government’s position on whether Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, can be prosecuted for terrorism.
In a statement he issued Friday night, Ozekhome argued that even though Pantami committed the alleged terrorist acts before the enactment of the Terrorsim (Prevention Amendment) Act 2013, he could be prosecuted under Section 46 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004 (EFCC Act).
Many have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to relieve Pantami of his appointment as a minister after he admitted making incendiary religious statements sometime between 2000 and 2006, as an Islamic scholar. ....
