The Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy has called for the establishment of an independent regulator for effective operations of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
Dr Isa Pantami, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy made the call at a one-day public hearing in Abuja on Monday.
The public hearing was organised by the Senate Committee on Communications was on two bills- the Nigerian Postal Service amendment bill and Nationwide Toll-free emergency number establishment Bill, 2021.
Pantami said that a situation where the regulator was also involved in the provision of postal service would not make for effective operations of NIPOST. ....

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Communications on Monday held a public hearing on the reform of the Nigerian Postal Service and the introduction of National Emergency Number 122.
The joint committee had the presence of the President of the Senate, Senator, Ahmed Lawan and the chairman of the committees on Communications from both chambers, Sen Oluremi Tinubu and Hon Akeem Adeyemi.
The public hearing is to engage stakeholders in the sector on two bills namely: Nigeria Postal Service Act Cap N127 LFN 2004 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2021 (SB 657); and the Nationwide ToII-Free Emergency Number (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2021 (SB. 583). ....

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami has advocated an immediate reversal of the zero budget status for NIPOST.
The Minister said the reversal became necessary because the trend has been the practice for so many years, a situation that had hampered the growth of NIPOST and the postal industry.
The Minister made the observation at the Courier Services Forum organized by Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, where he engaged stakeholders aimed at moving the industry forward for effective and efficient services to Nigerians. ....
