Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival returns with 'Midsummer Night's' | Arts

This file photo shows a detail of a portrait of William Shakespeare, presented by the Shakespeare Birthplace trust, in central London in 2009, soon after its discovery. The portrait, believed to be almost the only authentic image of the writer made from life, has belonged to one family for centuries but was not recognized as a portrait of Shakespeare until the 2000s. There are very few likenesses of Shakespeare, who died in 1616.

Based on the 1975 E.L. Doctorow novel of the same name, the 1996 musical “Ragtime” takes place in and around New York City during the first two decades or so of the 20th century.
And yet so many of the issues it explores — women’s rights, racial justice, immigration and labor rights — remain potent, divisive concerns in 2021.
Which is why Art 4 decided to produce “Ragtime” now as a virtual work while live performances remain problematic and controversial more than a year into the coronavirus pandemic.
“COVID-19 was like this microscope that really highlighted a lot of existing issues that we face as Americans, some more than others,” Art 4 Artistic Director Mark Albin says. “We wanted to meet the moment. … It’s really a tragedy that we haven’t been able to progress further as a society and that we’re continuing to have exhausting conversations.” ....
