(ABC 6 News) - In the last year, people have been busy getting tested for COVID-19. But they may have forgotten to test for other health concerns
That s one reason why Cerro Gordo County Public Health hosted an HIV testing event Monday in Mason City.
The clinic offered free and fast testing along with a 10 dollar gift card for Hy-Vee to everyone who came and got tested.
HIV case numbers in Iowa have been steady over the past couple of years, with 98 new cases in Iowa in 2020 and 3,000 cases overall.

Anti-microbial resistant gonorrhea cases on the rise in Cerro Gordo Co.

(ABC 6 News) - Preliminary data provided shows an alarming increase in confirmed gonorrhea cases in Cerro Gordo County.
The Iowa Department of Public Health says in 2019 there were 35 reported cases of gonorrhea in Cerro Gordo County and by the end of 2020 there were 110 cases of gonorrhea reported in the county, an increase of about 214%.
“CG Public Health typically sees about 3-7 cases in a year, the rest being reported by other providers,” states Sam Severson, Disease Prevention Specialist and Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program Coordinator at CG Public Health. “In December of 2020 we had 14 cases alone.” ....

MASON CITY, Iowa – Preliminary data showed cases of gonorrhea tripled in Cerro Gordo County in 2020.
Iowa Department of Public Health statistics show the county had 35 reported cases of gonorrhea in 2019 and 110 in 2020. That’s an increase of around 314% and health officials say gonorrhea is showing an increased resistance to treatment.
