Harris named Norwalk library director

NORWALK, Conn. Sherelle Harris has been named Director of the Norwalk Public Library System.
“Sherelle knows the Library system and the staff and has a special connection to our residents. She is a leader, role model, and community advocate, and I know she is going to do wonderfully in this position,” Mayor Harry Rilling said in a press release.
Harris, a Board of Education member, served as the Assistant Director from 2010 to October, when she was named interim director after Norwalk Public Library Director Christine Bradley took early retirement.
With this promotion, Harris has become the first Black person to serve as Director of the Norwalk Library System, the press release noted. The Black Caucus of the American Library Association offered its congratulations. ....

Norwalk Council questions school bathroom needs

NORWALK, Conn. Two Norwalk Common Council members are pushing back on parental perceptions that middle school bathrooms need to be gutted and replaced.
District E Democrats Tom Livingston and Lisa Shanahan say they visited all four Norwalk middle schools and the bathrooms are not as bad as they’re described. In response to their thoughts, the Council Planning Committee voted to remove $38,000 from the planned $1.5 million for bathroom renovations and instead fund the Norwalk Public Library’s newspaper digitization project. This is slated for a full Council vote Tuesday. ....

Norwalk CFO: City has asked BoE to delay capital projects

NORWALK, Conn.
Norwalk’s financial chief has advised Common Council members not to fund a new welcome center for Norwalk Public Schools this year. He also recommends saying “no” to funding the Silvermine Elementary School driveway, bathroom renovations and the cafeteria work that’s been planned. Instructional technology should also be a no, as far as Chief Financial Officer Henry Dachowitz is concerned.
Dachowitz, in his recommended capital budget, warned that Norwalk’s triple A bond rating would be jeopardized by adding more than $120 million to the City’s existing debt. The City is working to delay and spread out its projects, he said. ....
