Harris named Norwalk library director


NORWALK, Conn. Sherelle Harris has been named Director of the Norwalk Public Library System.
“Sherelle knows the Library system and the staff and has a special connection to our residents. She is a leader, role model, and community advocate, and I know she is going to do wonderfully in this position,” Mayor Harry Rilling said in a press release.
Harris, a Board of Education member, served as the Assistant Director from 2010 to October, when she was named interim director after Norwalk Public Library Director Christine Bradley took early retirement.
With this promotion, Harris has become the first Black person to serve as Director of the Norwalk Library System, the press release noted. The Black Caucus of the American Library Association offered its congratulations. ....

Martin Luther King essay contest winners announced

NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk’s 2021 Martin Luther King essay contest winners have been announced.  139 students submitted essays discussing topics set forth by the Norwalk Public Library management team: educational equity, environmental equity, and racial justice equity.
“Congratulations to all of the students who took the time to submit an essay,” Norwalk Public Library Interim Director Sherelle Harris said.   “I was a little worried that the pandemic might prevent this, but everyone pulled to make it happen.”

An essay contest based upon Dr. Martin Luther King’s teachings is open to all Norwalk Public School students, according to a press release. Three cash prizes will be awarded, courtesy of Norwalk Branch NAACP: 1st place $100, 2nd place $50, and 3rd place $25.  The essays should discuss one or more of these three forms of equity: educational equity, environmental equity, and racial justice equity.  Each category will get certificates from the Norwalk Public Library.
“Dr. King’s legacy continues to be felt in Connecticut, the United States, and around the Globe,” Mayor Harry Rilling said.  “I encourage all Norwalk students to submit an essay, and while there can only be a few winners, I hope all in our community will read their important words.
