Norwalk Council roundup: Parks master plan, gender neutrality, public safety


NORWALK, Conn. On Tuesday, the Norwalk Common Council unanimously:
Moved forward with work on a new Recreation & Parks master plan
Approved gender neutral language for the City code
Approved a simulator for Norwalk Police
Provided a training facility for prospective firefighters and heard an update on recruitment
Master plan
Director of Recreation and Parks Nick Roberts has moved on and the Common Council is moving forward on an initiative he began in September 2019, authorizing $249,975 for a consultant to create a new Recreation and Parks master plan.
“I believe the last time a master plan was done for Recreation and Parks was nearly 20 years ago or so. However, we’re finally moving in the right direction. And particularly as the city is growing and our parks and open space will become a more vital resource for recreation and other public uses,” Recreation and Parks Committee Chairwoman Darlene Young (D-District B) said. ....

Norwalk Council questions school bathroom needs

NORWALK, Conn. Two Norwalk Common Council members are pushing back on parental perceptions that middle school bathrooms need to be gutted and replaced.
District E Democrats Tom Livingston and Lisa Shanahan say they visited all four Norwalk middle schools and the bathrooms are not as bad as they’re described. In response to their thoughts, the Council Planning Committee voted to remove $38,000 from the planned $1.5 million for bathroom renovations and instead fund the Norwalk Public Library’s newspaper digitization project. This is slated for a full Council vote Tuesday. ....
