LANCASTER — Who calls in the night? Who glides on shadowy wings in silent flight? What makes owls such extraordinary night hunters?
A Squam Lakes Natural Science Center naturalist will present a program Thursday via Zoom on three of the state s owls to help people find out what is myth or fact about these nocturnal birds.
During the program, the naturalist will instruct participants on using the interactivity features available in Zoom. Depending on the age and number of participants, this may include using the virtual hand raise, voting yes/no, filling out a poll, giving a thumbs-up and using the chat window. ....

LANCASTER — The White Mountains of New Hampshire are home to many gushing, cascading waterfalls waiting to be discovered. Bruce Bolnick, author of “Waterfalls of the White Mountains” will present an evening describing these waterfalls and guide us through an excursion to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He has served for years as a Volunteer Naturalist for the Appalachian Mountain Club and Nature Guide at Mass Audubon s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield.
The completely revised and updated edition of “Waterfalls of the New Hampshire” outlines hiking trails ideal for observing the more than 100 waterfalls in the region, no matter experience level or ability. Each hike details the distance, difficulty, altitude gain, and directions to the starting point. Federal funds to pay for 3 Mt. Washington summit projects


CONCORD — Three big-ticket capital projects in the 60.3-acre Mount Washington State Park will be built and paid for with federal funds available under the American Rescue Plan and state and local fiscal recovery funds designed to boost the post-pandemic economy.
The N.H Division of Parks and Recreation of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources sought $22.5-plus-million federal dollars to pay for various capital projects at state parks across New Hampshire.
Both members of the Legislative Fiscal Committee and governor and Executive Council quickly greenlighted this bold “ask.”
Nearly a quarter of the total sum — $5,495,000 — will be spent on the 6,288-foot summit: $3 million to replace its undersized and failing sewage treatment plant; $1,020,000 to upgrade its water system and $1,475,000 on maintaining the integrity of the Sherman Adams Summit Building and ensuring compliance with today’s life safety codes. ....
