Governor's Volunteer Service Award nominations for Wilmington area

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award.
The awards program, created by the Office of the Governor in 1979, recognizes North Carolina’s most dedicated volunteers. Through the years, the award has been bestowed on thousands of North Carolinians who have shown concern and compassion for their neighbors by volunteering in their local community.
A local committee will evaluate the nominations.
Each county selects up to 10 individuals, businesses, groups/teams and one paid director of volunteers to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their communities. One of the nominees will be nominated for the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, which is awarded to the top 20 volunteers in the state. ....

Fire broke out in the home of William and Ann Ellis in 1962, but the Henderson Fire Department was quickly on the scene and put out the fire before it could do extensive damage.
Looking back on the event 58 years later, Ann Ellis said if the Fire Department had not been so quick to respond, âMy house would have burned down.â
Simply saying âthank youâ seemed to be inadequate. So on Christmas Eve of that year, she took a batch of her special pineapple upside down cupcakes to share with the firefighters.
What started as a simple act of appreciation became an annual event. It was soon expanded to include the Police Department and the Vance County Sheriffâs Office. Ellis has delivered her baked delicacies every year over that span of more than half a century. ....
