Looming public restroom shortage threatens the vibe on Wrightsville Beach

Despite a pre-Memorial Day deadline for completion, the new public bathrooms at Wrightsville Beach sit unfinished, even as hordes of tourists prepare to descend on the shores this coming summer. (Port City Daily/Preston Lennon)
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH The undertaking of building freestanding public restrooms near the central business hub of Wrightsville Beach is taking longer than expected. The initial deadline, set months ago, targeted an early May completion date. Now, Memorial Day which represents an incoming, sustained deluge of tourist activity is right around the corner, and the project is still incomplete and behind schedule.
A toilet shortage could be exposed in the coming weeks, when the town’s population and foot traffic will greatly swell. Previously, Wrightsville Beach leased public bathrooms in a retail building in the same commercial plaza. When the property owner sought to double the rent, the town nixed the lease, according to town manager Tim Owens.  ....

Second extension for Oak Island beach nourishment
May 20, 2021,
by
Eldin Ganic
The Town of Oak Island last week received written confirmation from USACE and the N.C. Division of Coastal Management that a second extension had been granted for sand distribution operations in the 2020 / 2021 Nourishment Project.
This second extension will now allow two dredges currently in operation, the Ohio and the Dodge Island to continue sand distribution to continue through midnight Saturday, May 22, for the Dodge Island.
It maintains equipment demobilization during daylight hours only with a deadline of Wednesday, May 26, the Town said.
As with the first extension, completion of the project remains a key priority towards providing the much-needed protection the sand berms would offer during the upcoming hurricane season. ....

Terrapin Tally needs helpers in Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender

If you’re not familiar with the Terrapin Tally, it’s a citizen-science project that started as a pilot program on Masonboro Island in 2014 to collect data about the diamondback terrapin.
Now in its seventh year, it’s going to be bigger than ever. State and local agencies have expanded the count to 10 sites, and are hoping to recruit a couple hundred volunteers to help. Those interested can sign up for training sessions that take place Thursday, April 8 and Saturday, April 10.
1. You probably live close to one of these turtles, but may not know it.
Diamondback terrapins, known for a pretty spotted pattern on their head and spiral patterned shell, are found in salt marshes, estuaries, and mangrove swamps along the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. They usually live in one area throughout their lives in protected waters behind barrier islands and tidal creeks – hidden among the marsh and cord grass. They will bury themselves in mud ....

Sea turtle expert concerned by proposed year-round dredging at state ports

MOREHEAD CITY — A local sea turtle expert said last week he’s concerned about a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposal that the state eliminate the “window” in which channel maintenance by hopper dredge is allowed at the ports of Morehead City and Wilmington.
The federal agency says the move would increase the availability of dredge boats and ensure the work can occur year-round, on a timely basis. The proposal would remove the Dec. 1 to April 15 environmental dredging window.
“Eliminating the seasonal restrictions on dredging and increasing the lethal take limits …would not be well-aligned” with the longstanding U.S. policy to protect threatened and endangered sea turtles, Dr. Craig Harms, a doctor of veterinary medicine at N.C. State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the N.C. State Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City, said in an email last week. ....
