Dhaka, Mar 4 (efe-epa).- Bangladeshi cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, detained under the controversial digital security act, was released on Thursday after week-long protests following the custodial death of a writer arrested under the same law.
After spending nearly 10 months in prison, Kishore is now “free and resting at home,” his brother Ahsan Kabir confirmed to EFE.
Kishore was released provisionally around noon on Thursday after the documents for his bail were furnished, Abdul Jalil – the head of central Kashimpur prison – told EFE.
The artist was arrested on May 6, 2020 along with writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who was declared dead on Feb. 25 in a hospital after losing consciousness in a high-security prison. ....

Dhaka, Mar 3 (efe-epa).- The Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Wednesday granted bail to a cartoonist nearly 10 months after his pre-trial detention amid continuing protests over his release and a contentious law under which he was arrested.
Ahmed Kabir Kishore was arrested on May 6, 2020, along with writer Mushtaq Ahmed, and was charged under the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA) for allegedly “spreading rumors” on social media.
Kishore “was granted bail for six months by the court. We expect him to be released soon as there is no other case pending against him,” his lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua told EFE. ....

Dhaka, Mar 1 (efe-epa) – Protests continued for the fourth day in Bangladesh on Monday following the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in custody amid calls for a review of the controversial Digital Security Act.
Mushtaq, detained in May and charged under the act for “spreading rumors” on social media, was declared dead at a hospital in the central Gazipur district on Thursday, hours after he fell unconscious at a high-security prison.
Different political, rights and student organizations have been protesting Mushtaq’s death since Friday

Dhaka, Feb 26 (efe-epa).- Several hundred students and political activists on Friday held demonstrations in Dhaka, protesting against the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in custody after being held in pre-trial detention for nine months.
Mushtaq was declared dead at a hospital in central Gazipur district on Thursday, hours after he fell unconscious at a high-security jail.
Protests began around 10 am on the Dhaka University campus before the demonstrators, mostly the members of Left-leaning student organizations, blocked the busy Shahbagh intersection.
