Free COVID-19 testing and resource events coming up


HENDERSON — Green Rural Redevelopment Organization Inc. is partnering with Shiloh Baptist Church and Oxford Public Works to offer free COVID-19 testing and the distribution of food and personal protective equipment in Henderson, Oxford and Warrenton.
The first of two COVID-19 community testing and resource-distribution events will take place in Oxford on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the city of Oxford Public Works building parking lot, at 127 Penn Ave.
The second is on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shiloh Baptist Church parking lot, at 635 S. College St. in Henderson.
The third is on Friday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Warren County High School parking lot, at 149 Campus Drive in Warrenton. ....

COVID-19 vaccine info and myths combated in NC Black communities


On a mild afternoon in mid-December, Kathey Avery knocked on several doors in Shiloh, a historically Black neighborhood in south Asheville.
The residents who answered knew her well. They were her clients, each a woman over 50 who leans on Avery, a community nurse, for help navigating America’s often-byzantine health care systems.
“I trust Kathey with my life,” Angelique Scott said.
On this afternoon, Avery handed each woman a small holiday-decorated bag with a gift card, a mask, and a page of basic vaccine facts inside. Stepping 6 feet back, she explained she was stopping by to “give a little information” on the incoming coronavirus shots. ....
