LAHORE: In a first major relief to sugarcane growers from wrongdoings of powerful sugar mills owners after passing of revised Punjab Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950, the cane commissioner has initiated action against a sugar mill for not clearing sugarcane dues.
The Punjab cane commissioner has issued an order to attach the stock of M/S GB Private Limited (ex-Pasrur Sugar Mills) while initiating proceedings for not making payments to sugarcane growers under the provisions of Punjab Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950.
According to the order issued on July 09, 2021, the cane commissioner stated that the Sugar Factories (Control) Act, 1950, saddles the office of cane commissioner, Punjab, with the responsibility of safeguarding the rights of the sugarcane growers, including the right of sugarcane price, within the time period stipulated in Section 13 (2) of the said Act and in case of non-pay ....

LAHORE: After the approval by Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar, the amended Punjab Sugar Factories Control Act 2021 has been implemented. A new clause regarding payments to farmers has been added to the new act. The sugar mills will be bound to clear their payments to cane farmers through banks. The sugar mills are bound to clear their payments to farmers within 45 days and strict action will be taken by the cane commissioner against those violating this rule. According to details, significant changes have been made for the ease of farmers in the act. In the new act, a new clause has been added regarding payments to farmers. As per the amended act, the sugar mills will be allowed crushing on the dates given by the government. LAHORE: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone) has termed legislation by Punjab Assembly black law for sugar mills.
Imprisonment term has been increased from one year to three years while fine increased from Rs1 lakh to Rs5 lakh, a spokesperson of PSMA said here on Wednesday. The recent amendment in the Punjab Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950 has turned it into the strictest law for the sugar industry, he claimed.
Under this amendment, he added, trial of the accused will be held before a section 30 magistrateâs court instead of an ordinary magistrateâs court. Not only that, he continues to say, but recently the Sugar Supply Chain Management Order 2021 has been introduced to regulate the sugar industry, which is another black law that could be a prelude to the closure of a business. ....
