Govt extends preventive detention of Rizvi for 90 days - Newspaper

LAHORE: As 90-day detention of Hafiz Saad Rizvi, leader of proscribed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) was set to end on Saturday, the Punjab government issued a fresh notification of his preventive detention for another 90 days.
Rizvi was detained on April 12, 2021 under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance 1960 for 30 days with two extensions of the same days.
This time, the deputy commissioner of Lahore invoked his powers under Section 11 EEE of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 and issued the order for detention of Rizvi for 90 days. On the other hand, the Supreme Court (Lahore registry) is set to hear on Monday a petition challenging the detention of Rizvi. ....

ISLAMABAD: A relative of Saad Hussain Rizvi, the chief of Tehrik-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), approached the Supreme Court for his release on Wednesday.
Saad Rizvi, son of the late Allama Khadim Hussain Rizvi, was arrested on April 12 over allegations that he had incited his followers to take law into their own hands as, according to him, the government had gone back on its promise to expel the French ambassador.
The petition, filed by Ameer Hussain, the uncle of Saad Rizvi, seeks overturning of the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) May 24 decision to dismiss his previous plea. ....

The Lahore police have arrested and registered cases against five more students for protesting against on-campus examinations outside the University of Central Punjab on January 26.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party Thursday strongly denounced assault on students in Lahore and called for early release of arrested student.
Former Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani said baton charge and arrest of the students in Lahore by Punjab police is strongly condemned. In a statement, he said students protesting against matters relating to academics have been charged under various provisions of Pakistan Penal Code and section 16 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960.
