Farmers should prefer BT cotton for cultivation: experts

The agriculturists have advised growers to prefer cultivation of BT cotton varieties along with 10 per cent area of non-BT cotton crops to save it from pest attacks. A spokesman for Agriculture Extension Department said on Tuesday that the government had set a target of 200,000 acres for bringing it under cotton cultivation this year, and for the purpose, the department was also providing subsidy of Rs 1000 per bag of approved and certified cotton seed and the farmers could purchase cotton seed from Punjab Seed Corporation on subsidized rates. He said that the experts have recommended 17,500 to 20,000 plants of cotton in one acre if the crop was cultivated from April 20 to May 10. Therefore, the farmers should choose fertile land for cotton cultivation and ensure presence of 17,500 to 20,000 cotton saplings in a field to get its bumper yield. They should also cultivate approved BT Cotton varieties including IUB-13, MNH-886, BS-15, NIAB-878 and FH ....

LAHORE: The government is about to cancel licences of more than 200 seed companies for noncomplying with the laws and will unveil a revised regulatory framework to restrict suppliers’ operation in certain geographies to curb supply of substandard seeds, it was learnt on Thursday.
Sources said the government has prepared the revised seed regulatory framework and consultation with the stakeholders is underway.
“The area of operation of each seed company is being defined in the proposed seed regulatory framework and companies are to be categorized on the basis of their certain area such as district level, division level, province level and national level,” an official of food security ministry said in a recent moot. ....

Cotton price hits the season-highest of Rs10,200 per maund

KARACHI: Cotton spot rate has reached to this season’s high of Rs10,200 per maund, taking cue from uptick in international prices, while laggard production estimate kept panic buying up, industry people said on Saturday.
Karachi Cotton Association’s spot rate committee increased the spot rate by Rs250 per maund to the highest spot rate of Rs10,200 per maund.
Price hike was also recorded in the international market, said Naseem Usman, chairman of Karachi Cotton Brokers Association. New York Cotton Market’s futures increased to 78 cents per pound, which is highest rate of the season.
US exports remained lower by 30 percent during the week. Dollar rate also decreased during the week. Cotton rates, however, increased despite of 25 December holiday, bank closing and threats of Covid-19, said Usman. ....
