Jenrick confirms local government finance settlement for 2021-22

The government has confirmed details of next year’s local government finance settlement.
Local government’s core spending power could rise by 4.6% in cash terms depending on decisions made by councils, communities secretary Robert Jenrick said in a written statement to MPs. This is slightly above the 4.5% cited in last November s spending review.
Mr Jenrick also said that following a request from London mayor Sadiq Khan (Lab), the Greater London Authority can raise an additional £15 on band D “to fund transport concessions above the average level available elsewhere in England”. The statement adds that “the final decision on the increase in tax will be for the mayor of London to take”. ....

Anger as council tax increases behind almost 90% of spending power rise

Almost 90% of next year’s core spending power increase for local government is based on the assumption that councils impose the maximum available council tax increase on residents, government figures reveal.
When the 4.5% spending power increase for 2021-22 was first announced by the chancellor at the spending review the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimated three quarters of it would be reliant on council tax increases.
However, figures published yesterday by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government alongside the provisional local government finance settlement show the figure is actually 87%.
The news was met with widespread criticism from across the sector. ....
