Millions in East Africa on brink of starvation: World Vision

Over 7 million people across six East African countries are at the cusp of starvation as communities have faced existential threats from violence, flooding, the pandemic and locust infestation, the evangelical humanitarian organization World Vision has warned.
According to the charity, which operates in nearly 100 countries, thousands of children could face death or long-term health consequences if the international community does not respond quickly to East Africa s worsening crisis.
Debebe Dawit, program manager for World Vision’s humanitarian emergency affairs team, recently visited Ethiopia and saw firsthand the effects of poverty in the East African country. He said the situation is “severe.” ....

Their food banks put out three times the usual this year, due to Covid-19 joblessness and homelessness, totaling over 17 billion pounds of food. On average, at least 10 percent of Americans cannot afford food that contains actual nutrition (organic whole food and non-GMO). Currently, one in every four families are experiencing food ‘insecurity’ during this pandemic, one in six families face hunger crisis periodically, and one in ten American adults (about 18 million) literally don’t have enough food to eat right now.

UN Rights Official Warns of Starvation, Poverty in North Korea From Long COVID-19 Lockdown

North Koreans are starving to death, with children and elderly resorting to begging in the streets or risking execution by breaking laws to obtain food from China, a new report by the UN Special Rapporteur on North Korean Human Rights says, calling for the country to face international justice for mistreating its population.
“Prolonged COVID-19 prevention measures have resulted in a drastic decline in trade and commercial activities and severe economic hardship to the general population, causing increased food insecurity,” said the report, presented by Special Rapporteur Tomás Ojea Quintana to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva by teleconference this week. ....
