Hawke s Bay-owned Popsy, one of only six fillies to have won the Group 1 New Zealand Derby in the last 60 years, finally succumbed to old age last week and had to be euthanised at age 30.
The Sir Tristram mare had been residing at Hawke s Bay s Montana Lodge Stud for the past six years, on the property owned by Graham and Isabell Roddick. ....

The success of New Zealand-bred horses in the Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) continued last Saturday with Explosive Jack taking out the Sydney Classic.
The son of the ill-fated stallion Jakkalberry got up to win in the last stride of the 2400m feature, closing from the rear of the field to prevail from fellow New Zealand-bred runners Young Werther (Tavistock) and Lion’s Roar (Contributer).
Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Explosive Jack followed a less traditional path into the Derby, traversing Australian states at will.
He won on debut over 1600m in late November, before running fifth over 2100m at his next start. A month later he stepped up over 2400m when he won at Kembla Grange against older horses before heading to Tasmania to take out the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) in February. ....

New career options working well for Darryl Bradley

“People have said, ‘You’re riding well at the moment’, but I’m not riding any differently. It’s just circumstances – I’ve gotten on good horses at the right time and given them the right rides,” Bradley said.
“But it can be a snowballing effect. People like a jockey that’s winning and winning creates better opportunities.”
Bradley was one of the country’s most consistent riders for many years. He rode at least 40 winners for 26 out of 27 seasons from 1989-90 to 2015-16, the one exception coming when he spent most of 2000-01 outside New Zealand.
But things dropped away suddenly after 2015-16 and he hasn’t ridden more than 15 winners in any season since then. ....
