HUNTINGTON – A former Hurricane High School teacher says a host of Putnam and Kanawha county officials conspired to prosecute her on what she calls baseless criminal charges.
WINFIELD – A Putnam County Commission rezoning vote is on hold after a circuit judge filed a court order stopping it just hours before a meeting.
On July 29, Circuit Judge Phillip Stowers filed the Order on Rule to Show Cause in relation to a Petition for Writ of Mandamus and/or Writ of Prohibition filed Linda Tennant and Fred Mader against the Putnam County Commission and Commissioners Ron Foster, Brian Ellis and Andy Skidmore.
According to the order, Timothy and Dawn Spradling had filed a rezoning petition for property at 1006 and 1012 Mount Vernon Road to be rezoned from single family residential to suburban commercial.
Sorting Through Critical Race Theory By
I am trying to understand Critical Race Theory, and it is not a simple matter.
Perhaps the easiest way to break down the idea comes from one of the primary originators, the legal scholar and civil rights activist Derrick Bell. He posited that racism in this country is not an aberration, but rather a fundamental part of our society.
The argument is that, given our history of slavery, Jim Crow and the long struggle for civil rights, racism permeates our policies and institutions. The theory goes that those racist policies promote the general welfare of the majority whites, while relegating blacks to second class citizenship.
A sign-toting supporter of the monument’s removal paraded in front of commissioners with a poster lamenting a “Jim Crow Clown Show.”
For longtime residents and newcomers alike, the scene was a discouraging display in a county that lags behind other counties statewide in per capita income, education, healthcare and other important areas.
For some, the monument debate is an unhelpful distraction that has outlived its relevance.
For others, the division over the statue is tied into deeper issues that also have affected the ability of the county of 74,521 residents to lift itself out of stagnation.
“To see this kind of conflict between groups, it’s disappointing to see in a little community like this,” said Larry Beaton, a fifth-generation Palatka resident and historian for the Putnam County Historical Society. “People don’t stop and think how that looks and how people perceive that, even the elected officials.”
