Singapore and region stand to benefit from RCEP free trade agreement: MAS

Individual countries in the trade bloc are expected to see a small boost in their GDP of between 0.4 and 0.6 per cent. - ST

Monetary sovereignty of central banks should be respected: former governor of the Chinese central bank--China Economic Net

The monetary sovereignty of national central banks should be respected. Meanwhile, digital technology can still be used to greatly improve convenience, said the former governor of the Chinese central bank on Sunday.

Perhaps in the long run there will be a move towards monetary integration, but it doesn t work yet, Zhou Xiaochuan, Vice-Chairman of the Board of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), former governor of the People s Bank of China (PBC), said on Sunday at a panel for digital payments and digital currency at the BFA in South China s Hainan Province.

Zhou added that each country has its own control over the economy and currency sovereignty. Therefore, if the central bank s digital currency was to be developed, many countries will have their own digital currencies, which are based on their own currency and under their own rules. In this case, the cross-border use of digital currency is very complicated. ....

The New Zealand sharemarket had a late surge after trading flatly for most of the day as the Reserve Bank signalled business-as-usual in its monetary policy.
The S&P/NZX 50 Index closed 94.96 points or 0.75

The Reserve Bank maintained its loose and easy policy, as expected, with no changes to the 0.25 per cent official cash rate, the funding for lending and the $100 billion cap on large-scale asset purchases – the latter two programmes running through to June next year. ....

Daines announced he will soon introduce legislation to stop federal taxpayer dollars from going to states that make direct or indirect payments to illegal immigrants. Daines announced the legislation after news reports found that New York created a $2.1 billion fund to provide illegal immigrants payments, which could then be covered by the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus package. ....
