Media Alert: Second Round of USGS Dye-Tracing Study on the Kansas River Begins This Week Release Date: April 28, 2021 U.S. Geological Survey and partners will inject a harmless, bright red fluorescent dye into the Kansas River on April 29, weather permitting. The study is being done by the USGS in cooperation with the Kansas Water Office, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, The Nature Conservancy, City of Manhattan, City of Topeka, City of Olathe and WaterOne. The Kansas River provides drinking water for multiple cities in northeastern Kansas and is used for recreational activities. This dye-tracing study will provide a better understanding of how quickly water flows from one location to another. Water-resource managers use this information to effectively respond to potential critical events such as harmful algal blooms or contaminant spills that may make the water unsafe for the public to use. RPU will help state officials monitor groundwater of four below-ground aquifers. 7:30 am, Apr. 23, 2021 × Actually, the capping is just the beginning of the project. RPU is closing municipal water well 16, which was drilled in 1958. It extends about 1,000 feet below ground through four aquifers beneath Rochester. However, instead of capping the well, RPU is working with the DNR to place water-monitoring sensors in all four of the aquifers. Water monitoring isn’t new to the DNR, but the state agency doesn’t have easy access to the underground aquifers let alone four of them. Since the 1980s, new municipal wells have not been permitted to extend below the Jordan aquifer, which is the first and highest of those aquifers.
