Shortly after starting his new job with the Virginia Department of Health as a public health nurse supervisor last February, 30-year-old Nathan Cass found himself vaulting from new employee orientation classes to the regionâs COVID-19 hotline coordinator.
âI was in orientation as the Health Department was just starting to ramp up and shift focus in anticipation of the coronavirus pandemic,â said Cass, whose office is located in the Stafford County Government Center.

Cass, a registered nurse, had just transitioned from a job as a medical facility inspector. Prior to that, he worked for the Health Department inspecting nursing homes and other treatment facilities to ensure they were complying with federal insurance requirements. He also spent a year at Stafford Hospital and worked at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian.
Special Election House District 2: Early voting ends Saturday, polls open on Tuesday
In Virginia’s House District 2, Voters in Prince William and Stafford counties will head to the polls on Tuesday to vote for a candidate to fill the seat held by Jennifer Carroll Foy, who stepped down this month to focus on her run for governor.
Heather Mitchell, who ran against Carrol Foy in 2019, is again vying for the seat for the Republicans. Political newcomer Candi King hopes to win the seat to keep it in the hands of Democrats.
Early voting is also underway for the election. As of Wednesday morning, a total of 235 voters had already cast their ballots in both counties.
