Victorian beach users ignoring safety signs amid record drowning death toll

Victoria has recorded its deadliest period on record for drownings, but many people are still ignoring safety signs at dangerous waterways.
Seven people have died in the water this year, prompting urgent pleas from authorities for swimmers and boating enthusiasts to take greater care.

Life Saving Victoria said its studies showed only 45 per cent of people observe safety signs warning of hazardous conditions including rips, submerged rocks and dangerous sea life.
The rescue service’s principal research associate, Bernadette Matthews, said the studies showed warning signs alone were insufficient to promote water safety. ....

Bushfire and safety warnings as temperatures to top 35 degrees

Emergency services are bracing for this seasonâs âmost challengingâ fire risk over the next 24 hours as a heatwave moves across Victoria and sends temperatures soaring past 40 degrees.
Melbourne is expected to swelter through an âoppressiveâ Sunday night, with temperatures not likely to dip below 27 degrees and then increasing to the 30s by mid-Monday morning, prompting a warning from Emergency Management Victoria about the fire danger, the âsignificantâ increase in drownings this year and heat-related illnesses.
Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp says emergency services are well prepared for this yearâs bushfire season.

Victoria drownings: Hero surfer makes two rescues at same spot less than 24 hours apart

A surfer has saved the lives of three children and a father from drowing in two separate incidents in Victoria.
Ben Roberts rescued the two different families almost 24 hours apart off Barwon Heads when happened to be passing by at Thirteenth Beach.
Today, Mr Roberts noticed a man and his son struggling in hot, difficult conditions.
