The Port of San Diego is doubling shore power capability at its B Street and Broadway Pier cruise ship terminals to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions on and around San Diego Bay.
The Board of Port Commissioners approved $4.6 million in funding for the project as well as various agreements related to equipment purchasing, construction and installment of additional shore power equipment that will allow two cruise vessels calling on San Diego to connect to shore power outlets at the same time. This means the ships will not have to run their diesel auxiliary engines while in port. ....

Audit shows Miss. rural water association plagued by financial problems
An audit of the North Lee County Water Association in Mississippi turned up widespread financial management problems, including violations of several state and federal laws, the Daily Journal (Tupelo, MS) reports.
The audit, which is likely “the most rigorous examination ever” of the nonprofit cooperative s financial records, comes on the heels of a $1.2 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Administration.
While copies of the audit are required to be available for public inspection, the water association did not comply with state law.
The association has been plagued with problems, according to the Daily Journal. ....

Over a decade since the City of San Diego approved a resolution to reduce the number of five-ton trucks that drive through the community of Barrio Logan, residents and activists believe it has done little to solve the problem.
Sitting outside of one of her neighbor’s home on Boston Avenue and 30th Street, Barrio Logan resident Philomena Marino pauses to let a semitrailer drive past before she speaks.
“Monkey see monkey do, it started off with one or two but it’s increasing,” Marino said as the semitrailer continues driving down the residential street. ....

Port weighs 40-year police, fire contracts with Chula Vista and Imperial Beach

Print
The Port of San Diego’s long-running agreements for outsourced police and fire service within the district last week escalated from a routine matter of business to a charged discussion about fairness and the agency’s role in scrutinizing costs.
At the Dec. 8 board meeting, the port’s seven appointed commissioners were asked to approve 40-year emergency service contracts, known as municipal service agreements, with the cities of Chula Vista and Imperial Beach. But after nearly two hours of deliberation, with the central debate relating to whether the port was in a position to act on the unprecedented contracts, the items were pushed for additional review to the next scheduled meeting. ....
