(TNS) and Tribune Media Services Anniston’s school board on Tuesday voted to pink-slip more than a dozen teachers and teachers’ aides, then in a separate vote approved roughly $20,000 in one-time bonuses to administrators. One member of the board said the bonus vote took the school system in the wrong direction. “This board has been concerned over the last several years about top-heaviness,” said board member Joan Frazier. “We are already spending more on salary for the top level positions, this year, more than we spent the previous year.”

Most Riverview School District elementary students are expected to move from hybrid learning to in-school classes four days a week starting Monday. Officials recently made the announcement via the district’s website and a letter to families. Students currently learn through a hybrid model, meaning they are split into two groups with each group in schools a couple of days a week and online on the other school days. Superintendent Neil English said kindergartners through fourth-graders at Verner Elementary in Verona and Tenth Street Elementary in Oakmont will shift to more in-person classes as the district starts its third grading period.

Oakmont officials held the line on real estate taxes and borough fees in their 2021 budget. Next year’s spending plan was approved via a 6-0 vote Monday night. Councilwoman Sophia Facaros was absent. Several council members participated virtually to help with social distancing and covid safety protocols. It’s been about four years since council raised taxes to the current 3.73-mill rate. Budget planning began in early September. There were multiple budget meetings in addition to financial discussions at council workshops and voting sessions. Borough Manager Scot Fodi said he was glad to see the budget pass, and believes Oakmont will be able to provide all services and complete multiple projects within the confines of the spending plan.
