But only recently in the United States have we come to seriously scrutinize a system that has racism baked into it at every level. In the weeks following George Floydâs murder and the beginning of Black Lives Matter protests, Governor Roy Cooper created the Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice. The task force, which included Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall, submitted to the governor in December more than 100 recommendations to make the justice system more equitable, including one to eliminate cash bail for certain low-level charges. ....
Report: Orange County Sees Recent Increase in Detentions During Pandemic
An Orange County nonprofit that focuses on criminal justice reform recently shared its latest quarterly report, revealing an increase of pretrial detentions during the last few months of the pandemic. The Orange County Bail/Bond Justice Project works to change unjust bail practices while providing assistance to those who cannot afford to pay their bail. “We think that how much money you have shouldn’t really determine whether you sit in jail before your trial,” said Kimberly Brewer, chair of the nonprofit. “Before your trial you’re still presumed innocent – that’s the way our justice system works.” ....
