Reporters perform a very important job on a daily basis by working hard to inform the public.
It’s a tough job that involves a lot of hours, a lot of note taking and writing, trying to meet deadlines and a lot of phone interviews and in some cases dealing with some difficult people in person.
The not-so-pleasant part comes with the job title, but reporters are tough and stay focused on the job at hand no matter what.
One part of a reporter’s job that is beyond frustrating is when repeated calls to a source aren’t returned. Sometimes a reporter has a source who is tied up in meetings or is on vacation. ....

Today In Johnson City History: July 7


July 7, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported an exhibition would take place at the Fall Branch High School. The event would be on July 13 “if the weather is fair, if not on the following Tuesday. The friends of this Institution and the public generally are respectfully invited to attend.” Z.B. Lockwood was the principal of the Fall Branch High School.
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1866.
July 7, 1887: According to The Comet, “Capt. S.T. Harris has purchased the Al Lyle corner, opposite the Hoss House, and as soon as he can get possession will erect a handsome bank building. The building will be fire proof (sic) with marble trimmings and tile floors. It will be used for a national bank.”In another item The Comet carried that day it was reported, that “Col. T.E. Matson returned yesterday morning from South Carolina. He reports every thing (sic) favorable for Johnson City ....

New Era owner announces new publisher


Paxton Media Group, parent company of the Kentucky New Era, has named longtime journalist Mike Alexieff regional publisher.
Currently publisher of Paxton’s newspapers in Middle Tennessee, Alexieff’s new responsibilities will include not only the New Era, but also The Messenger in Madisonville.
In announcing the promotion, Paxton Media Group Publisher Mike Weafer said, “Mike has a long track record as an award-winning journalist, and has successfully published our Middle Tennessee newspapers for the past two years. I’m confident he will serve our readers and advertisers in Western Kentucky equally well.”
Alexieff has spent most of the past 20 years in Kentucky, first as city editor at the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer and then as the top editor at the Bowling Green Daily News. He has also been editor of The Eagle Post in Oak Grove and The Messenger in Madisonville, so he is familiar with the region. ....
