Papua New Guinea tuna-fishing efforts uninterrupted by COVID-19

The Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea said its Marine Stewardship Council-certified tuna catches have not been interrupted – and even gained momentum – even in the face of COVID-19 and its effects on the industry and market.
According to the Papua New Guinea Fishing Industry Association (PNG FIA) 2020 annual report, the country s tuna haul in 2020 was 74,000 metric tons (MT).
PNG Fishing Association Sustainability Director Marcelo Hidalgo told SeafoodSource the data reporting 74,000 MT was collected from the National Fishery Authority of Papua New Guinea observers placed onboard and fleet s the Integrated Fishery Management System (iFIMS).
All told, the catch yielded 254 million tuna cans of tuna. ....

The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) has seen its ranks grow in 2021, with the Papua New Guinea Fishing Industry Association (PNG FIA) recently coming aboard as a funding partner and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) joining as an affiliated partner.
PNG FIA, which provides “a united voice for the fishing and associated industries in Papua New Guinea,” has been forging stakeholder partnerships on the basis of sustainability for years, according to FIA Director of Sustainability Marcelo Hidalgo.
Our partnership and stakeholder engagement started in August 2018, when FIA signed and cooperation agreement (MoU) with the National Fishery Authority (NFA) of PNG to support the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fishery certification of the PNG waters,” Hidalgo said in a statement shared with SeafoodSource. ....

The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) annual meeting ended on Tuesday, 15 December, and while the members were lauded for agreeing to a rollover of its vital tropical tuna measure, the commission failed to address the human rights and labor issues regarding observer and and crew safety the tuna-fishing sector.
Before its meeting, the WCPFC was lobbied by U.K. NGO Human Rights at Sea to adopt a CMM to address observer-related issues that include a lack of transparency in reporting of fisheries observer-related safety incidents, lack of availability of comprehensive employment contracts, and the need for the fisheries observers to access professional insurance provisions, among other recommendations. ....
