State School Board Expands Normandy's Governing Board After Complaints

Mike Jones is one of two new members who will join an expanded state-appointed board overseeing Normandy s school district. He previously served on the state school board.
The Normandy school district’s state-appointed governing board gained two more members Thursday as the state school board tried to appease concerns in the community over the struggling district’s leadership.
In a brief special meeting of the Missouri State Board of Education, board members approved expanding Normandy’s governing board, known formally as the Joint-Executive Governing Board, from five members to seven.
Mike Jones, a former state board member, will soon join Normandy’s board along with William Humphrey, who served on Normandy’s school board as an elected member before the state takeover. ....

Missouri gaining ground along broadband superhighway, but many more miles to go
A new report says Missouri ranks 32nd in the nation in broadband internet access – a positive step from 41st just a couple years ago. Federal and state aid have helped to boost access around Missouri.
The report says 23% of Missouri students still do not have access to high-speed internet. Plus, it says the state ranks in the bottom five for access to low-cost internet.

Missouri discusses plan to meet social and emotional needs of K-12 students
The Missouri Board of Education is working to craft a statewide plan to help deal with the intensifying social and emotional needs of K-12 public school students. During a board meeting Tuesday, member Kim Bailey says the COVID-19 era has aggravated these problems.

Bailey, from western Missouri’s Raymore, is a licensed mental health and trauma specialist. She says the state needs to identify the gaps that exist among kids.
“We know that by virtue of the way everything is set up right now, that there are students falling through holes, educationally as well as social-emotional,” says Bailey. “If we don’t do this and fill in this social-emotional gap that has been created because of COVID-19, I feel like we will never win the battle on the educational gap.” ....

St. Louis County's First Charter School Wins State Approval

Charter schools have broken out of the boundaries of Missouri’s two largest cities for the first time.
The Leadership School won a charter from a divided state school board Thursday and plans to open as an elementary school in north St. Louis County next fall. It will be located somewhere within the boundaries of the provisionally accredited Normandy school district.
The Leadership School’s model is to give students a voice and choice in their education by prioritizing leadership training. Founder Kimberly Townsend said the school will offer students a sense of belonging and strong academics. ....
