Hoyas sink Pirates, reach Big East final for first time since 2010

The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (12-12, 10-9 Big East) pulled off another upset against the Big East’s number five seed, defeating the No. 5 Seton Hall Pirates (13-13, 10-10 Big East) to advance to the Big East Tournament finals for the first time since 2010. Georgetown’s 66-58 win backs up their incredible performance against Villanova last night, and they now advance to play the winner of University of Connecticut and Creighton.
The Hoyas were led by senior forward Jamorko Pickett, who put up 19 points and 6 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes to spearhead Georgetown’s success. He was aided by freshman phenom guard Dante Harris, one of the biggest standouts of the tournament so far. Harris contributed 15 points (on 5-6 shooting) as well as 2 rebounds for the Hoyas. He ended his scoring run in the same way he did against Villanova ....

Coach John Chaney was much more than a basketball coach at Temple University. When President Peter J. Liacouras hired Chaney, it was an important step in making diversity one of Temple s special contributions to higher education.
And Coach Chaney was more than coach, more than mentor, more than father-figure, more than counselor - and finishing their education was, to Chaney, perhaps even more important than winning a game. Or national championship.
When President Liacouras asked me to make all the arrangements for alumni and the basketball team to fly to Los Angeles for a national tournament, Coach Chaney had trained his team to say please and thank you and how to dress properly for a special dinner the night before the tournament at President Liacouras sister s home. I remember seeing how pressed the slacks of the players were, along with jackets and ties. The slacks were pressed so that the crease was so sharp, it might have been able to slice bread. John Chaney’s death last week rekindled memories of the night he threatened to put UMass coach John Calipari six feet under.
It happened 27 years ago next Saturday, after UMass beat Temple 56-55 on a short jumper by Mike Williams with three seconds left. It was Calipari’s fourth win in five games against Temple, after Chaney’s teams had beaten Calipari’s Minutemen nine straight.
It wasn’t some run-of-the-mill A-10 game in the middle of winter. No indeed, it was played before a packed house in the spanking new Mullins Center and it moved the Minutemen (19-4) up to 10th in the AP poll and dropped the Owls (17-4) to 13th. ....
