Stanford tops Arizona 54 to 53 to win its first women's NCAA Tournament in 29 years

Stanford (31-2) built a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter before Arizona (21-6) cut it to 51-50 on star guard Aari McDonald s 3-pointer.
After a timeout, Jones answered with a three-point play with 2:24 left. That would be Stanford s last basket of the game. McDonald got the Wildcats with 54-53 with 36.6 seconds left converting three of four free throws.

It s been four and a half years since Coach Pat Summitt left us. When she passed away on June 28, 2016, she held the record for most career wins in NCAA history, men or women, with 1,098 victories. Since then, she has been passed by Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who now has 1,170 wins and just this week by Tara VanDerveer of Stanford, who now has 1,099. Other coaches will surely pass her in the future, but no longer holding that record doesn t diminish what she did for the game of basketball. ....

Former Schenectady resident and UAlbany basketball player Tara VanDerveer passed Pat Summitt for the most career victories all time in women s basketball history. VanDerveer s Stanford Cardinal defeated Pacific on Tuesday night 104-61. The win was number one thousand ninety-ninth victory in the legendary forty two year coaching career for VanDerveer.

VanDerveer was a 1971 graduate of the now closed Milne School in Albany. Following her stint in high school, VanDerveer played for one season for the UAlbany basketball before transferring to Indiana to finish her collegiate playing career. “Although difficult to narrow it down to just one, my favorite winning memory in my time with Tara had to have been breaking UConn’s streak in Maples in 2010. What was so amazing about that win wasn’t just the game and how we played, but mostly the preparation and team focus she instilled in us to be great any chance we could get.

“It was my sophomore year 2010-2011 and it was the end of December. Playing them was always a big deal and huge rivalry for us, so beating them at home in front of our crowd to end their winning streak was awesome. My mom and family were at the game and I remember it feeling like a tournament win. We went out to dinner afterward in the late evening and when I walked in the whole place erupted in cheers, so that was fun given it was my birthday too! ....
