New renderings for Dr. David Morris Park in Bayonne show the latest plans for the passive park on the corner of Broadway and East 47th Street. The park has a history of controversy surrounding developer plans to overhaul the small green space.
Uptown residents were outraged in December of 2018, when the city council approved a temporary-use agreement with the L Group, the developer of BayOne at the former site of Resnick’s hardware store, that allowed them to potentially remove five trees to erect scaffolding during construction. ....

February is Black History Month.  This is a great time to recognize the important role that the Black community has played in Bayonne since the beginning.  Black history is part of American history and Bayonne history.
Our municipality became the Township of Bayonne in 1861 and the City of Bayonne in 1869.  In the 1860’s, Bayonne was a rural community with a very small population.  Most local people made a living from farming, fishing, and boating.  Many Black residents worked in the shellfish trade at a time when oysters and clams thrived around Bayonne.  After Standard Oil arrived in the 1870s, Bayonne’s economy changed dramatically. ....

The events prompt locals to honor Black excellence

A number of contests aim to highlight Black excellence during Black History Month.
Virtual Contest
The Donald Byrd Cultural Foundation will showcase various genres of the visual and performing arts. Viewing is free and will be aired on the Donal Byrd Cultural Foundation website via Zoom.
Contestants are invited to submit videos in either the Visual Arts or Performing Arts categories. Cash prizes will be awarded in each category.
The contest is open to all ages. Submissions will be accepted until Feb. 28. Use wetransfer.com for all video submissions. ....

Donate to the toy drive in Bayonne before Dec. 20

To help families facing financial hardships amid the pandemic, the Bayonne Youth Center has partnered with Black in Bayonne to present the “From Our Family To Yours Toy Drive.”
The goal is to help 50 families in need of gifts this holiday season.
The toy drive accepts brand new toys, gift cards, and monetary donations.
Toy donations and gift cards can be dropped off at the Bayonne Youth Center or Assemblyman Nicholas Chiaravalloti’s Office.
The Bayonne Youth Center is at 524 John F. Kennedy Blvd. For drop offs, contact the center at bayonneyouthcenter@yahoo.com. The Assemblyman’s Office is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 836 Broadway. ....
