VA offers vaccines to any eligible veteran

The VA Bedford Healthcare System opened COVID-19 vaccinations to all veterans enrolled in VA healthcare, regardless of age, starting last week.
Enrolled veterans may schedule an appointment to receive a Pfizer vaccine in the auditorium of the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, by calling 781-687-4000 weekdays.
Appointments are available daily, including weekends, from 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Veterans will automatically be scheduled for their second dose in three weeks while at the clinic.
Caregivers enrolled in VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers Support are also eligible to receive the vaccine along with their veteran. ....

In-home caregivers prioritized in vaccine rollout, but some feel it's a step too late


That’s the experience of Makenzie Hirschinger, who lives in Fulton. 
In-home caregiver and mother Makenzie Hirschinger feeds her 1-year-old son, Jensen, who has Down syndrome. Annabel Thorpe, KOMU 8 Reporter
Hirschinger is a mother to 9-year-old Ayden, 2-year-old Spencer, and 1-year-old Jensen. Spencer has cerebral palsy, which is a motor disability, and Jensen has Down syndrome, which means he has an additional chromosome that alters the course of his development.
Both of these medical complexities may put Jensen and Spencer at a high-risk for severe illness if they were to contract COVID-19, according to the Center for Disease Control. If they were adults, they would fall into the high-risk category currently being vaccinated in Missouri under Phase 1B - Tier 2. ....

Youth and families program gears up for spring session


NEWTON — Catawba County 4-H has recently graduated its first cohort of families from the new Empowering Youth and Families program and is accepting registration for the spring group.
Empowering Youth and Families (EYFP) brings together middle-school-age youth and their caregiver for 10 weekly sessions with the program goal of reducing youth substance use through first strengthening the family unit.
Stella Carpenter, a parent, who participated in the program summarized, “The program is largely about building strong family relationships and educating youth so they will make wise choices.”
The spring session of Empowering Youth and Families will be offered on Thursdays starting March 11, from 6-8 p.m. via Zoom. ....
