Impact felt near and far through storied Sabbath School at Pacific Union College’s embrace of livestreaming for the pandemic age.
Unable to meet in its namesake room upon California’s pandemic lockdown last spring, the Choir Room Sabbath School at Pacific Union College went virtual in a give-it-a-try that became so successful that this class, known for amplifying discussion among a broadminded range of voices, will remain online even as lockdown reverses and the PUC Church opens its doors.
The Choir Room Sabbath School has thus become the Choir Zoom class for the time foreseeable ­ a conclusion without glimpse when the experiment began. “At first we thought there was no way we would want to remain online,” says class co-leader Nancy Lecourt. ....

The proposed curriculum is grounded in a flawed assumption that before students can engage in critical and creative thinking, they must first accrue a massive body of knowledge. Knowledge is, of course, important. However, learning hundreds of discrete facts disconnected from larger ideas makes it extremely difficult for students to make meaningful connections to their own lives and to broader understandings of concepts such as democracy, human rights, and social cohesion ideas that help us live well together. ....

It was midnight in Germany when an archaeology event highlighting ancient discoveries began livestreaming from 6,000 miles away at La Sierra University in Riverside, California, United States. But Evanthia Hatziminaoglou, an astrophysicist with the European Southern Observatory in Garching bei München, decided to view as much of it as her energy level would allow.
Hatziminaoglou had connected 10 years earlier with La Sierra archaeologists while serving as a dig site volunteer in Jordan. She had also delivered a joint presentation in Italy in 2019 on research into astronomy and archaeology with archaeologist Doug Clark, director of La Sierra’s Center for Near Eastern Archaeology (CNEA) on the school campus.  ....
