Burlington Council Hears Police Budget And Staffing Plans And New High School Siting Update

The Burlington, Vermont Board of Finance, composed of the mayor and city councilors, heard Monday from the acting police chief on the department’s 2022 budget proposal and plans for response in the wake of a shrinking budget.  City councilors also got an update from the public school superintendent on plans to find a site for a new high school building.
The Burlington Police Department’s fiscal year 2022 $16.1 million proposed budget presentation to the Board of Finance shows a reduction from past years.  Acting Chief Jon Murad said it shows how the department is dealing with a 2020 city council requirement that the department reduce staffing.  ....

Burlington High students get first-hand look at emergency response

Paramedics and firefighters swarmed the parking lot of Burlington High School on Thursday in an effort to rescue Randy from a car that had been T-boned by a vehicle traveling 25 mph.
The accident occurred some time ago. Randy isn t a person, but a 160-pound plastic dummy the Burlington Fire Department uses for simulation training.
Health science students watched as firefighters worked for about 20 minutes to pry open the driver s-side doors of the vehicle, which was donated by Beckman s Towing. They carefully extracted Randy and placed him on a stretcher, administered CPR and loaded him into the back of an ambulance.  ....

Introducing The Hawk Eye s Citizen Scholar Class of 2021
The Hawk Eye
Each year, The Hawk Eye asks schools in southeast Iowa and west central Illinois to nominate three students for the Bill Mertens Citizen Scholar Award. 
While eachnominee is worthy of the Citizen Scholar title, only one from each school can be selected for a chance at a $1,000 scholarship, named for The Hawk Eye s late publisher who established it in 2001, the third year of the Citizen Scholars program.
The winner will be announced May 30.
The minimum requirement for consideration was a 3.5 grade-point average. Nominees also were expected to demonstrate a four-year career of active engagement in the life of their school and community through participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities, as well as participation in events and organizations beyond their classroom walls in the places where they live. ....

WEST ADDISON Nancy O’Neill Ryan passed away peacefully on Monday, May 3, 2021, at her home in West Addison. Nancy was born February 13, 1944, in Burlington to John O’Neill and Katherine Horsford Kocsis. Nancy graduated from Burlington High School. She spent a post-graduate year at The Thomas School in Rowayton, Conn., after which she attended Johnson State College in Johnson, Vt.
Nancy will be remembered for her kind heart, big personality and great smile. She loved her family with reckless abandon, and it was mutual. She was a second mom to some and best friend to many. She was affectionately known as “Aunt Nanc” to her nieces and nephews and their children as well. ....
