Burlington School District to put $1 million in ESSER funds toward new positions

The Hawk Eye The Burlington School District plans to put about $1 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funding toward the creation of new, likely temporary positions geared toward boosting post-pandemic academic recovery.  Curriculum Director Cory Johnson told the Burlington School Board on Monday the most senior members of the district s human resources, policy and curricular committees met last week to discuss the district s $4.73 million in ESSER funds  made available through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act and what academic recovery services that money could be spent on. The joint committee recommended putting money toward expanding summer school options at all building levels, creating interventionist positions at each elementary, intermediate and middle school building, and creating additional at-risk or alternative support teaching positions at the high school.

That decision was not well received by many families in the district, board vice president Bruce Thuleen recalled of the community s reaction.
