Arlington County Board: Getting schools reopened not in our job description


A request that Arlington County Board members use their influence – whether through sweet-talking or something more forceful – to get county schools back up and running fell largely on deaf ears Dec. 12.
Board members said they were working with their School Board counterparts, but had no power to force a reopening of schools that have been shuttered since last March.
Acknowledging for the record that the situation is “really, really frustrating,” County Board Chairman Libby Garvey said the county government was providing resources to make an eventual back-to-class rollout possible, but the final say on resuming classes was not theirs.
“We really are providing all we can,” said Garvey, a former School Board member who, in her re-election bid this year, occasionally opined on the need to get classes back in operation. ....

Efforts by preservationists not scoring points with Arlington County Board


Efforts to place the 9-acre Rouse estate at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and North McKinley Road into a local historic district appear to have pushed the property owner to move forward with the “nuclear option” – tearing it down before such government action can take place.
And, county officials say, there is not much they can do to prevent it.
“Our hands are pretty much tied,” County Board Chairman Libby Garvey said Dec. 12, effectively rebuffing a request that the county government take stronger actions to reduce the likelihood that the estate’s circa-1907 main property might be razed.
At the board’s Dec. 12 meeting, Tom Dickinson – who last April made the request that the parcel be designated a local historic district – voiced concerns about the county’s issuing paperwork necessary for the structures on the site to be demolished, and asked that county leaders “immediately intervene” on the matter. ....

Arlington officials seek power to keep online-only meetings post-COVID

Added into the County Board’s 2021 General Assembly policy positions after a first draft was released is a new item asking the legislature to “permit localities and public bodies to set their own rules regarding ‘virtual’ participation.”
Board members are slated to approve the legislative wish list at their Dec. 12 meeting. The package will be forwarded to the seven members of the county’s General Assembly delegation.
Currently, Virginia government entities are allowed to ignore traditional (and sometimes statutorily required) meeting procedures so long as the state of emergency declared by Gov. Northam in March remains in place. But after it expires, bodies will be required to go back to normal meeting procedures unless the legislature amends state law. ....
