Kennebunk considers overhauling beach parking permits fees, process

KENNEBUNK, Maine – The town is proposing significant changes to its process and fees for beach parking permits.
Currently, residents can get their first vehicle permit for free, while second and third ones cost $5 and $10, respectively. According to Finance Director Joel Downs, the town is proposing $5 for every permit, starting with the first.
Another proposed change: license plate numbers would be printed on the permit, restricting a permit to a particular vehicle.
“That’s very much of a change,” Downs said.
Residents also would be required to present proof that they are a taxpayer in town, Downs said.
The proposed changes are consistent with what other Maine coastal communities have been doing with their beach parking permitting process, Downs noted. ....

Town hopes to work with KLPD through streetlight 'impasse'

KENNEBUNK, Maine – The select board has authorized town administrators and officials to meet with representatives of the Kennebunk Light and Power District to resolve what Chair Blake Baldwin described as an impasse regarding streetlights.
At issue is the town’s LED lighting project and its recent discovery that KLPD – not the town – owns the 800-plus streetlights that would be involved. Central Maine Power owns the other streetlights in the community.
Town Manager Michael Pardue said Tuesday that he had contacted KLPD Director Todd Shea about organizing a discussion and coordinating schedules.
“I view this as a partnership and am confident that upcoming discussions will prove fruitful,” Pardue said. ....
