Man pleads guilty to driving through crowd at Jones rally

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) An Alabama man who drove his three-wheeled motorcycle through a crowd of supporters of then-U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, injuring one woman, has pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment.
Charles David Harris, of Blountsville, was scheduled to go to trial Wednesday but agreed to a plea deal. Harris, 59, was sentenced to 120 days in jail with 116 days suspended, according to Guntersville Municipal Court officials, news outlets reported.
Harris was charged in October for driving a motorcycle through a crowd of people at an Oct. 18 campaign stop for Jones. One woman was reportedly injured in the incident, which happened weeks before the Democratic senator lost his reelection bid. ....

Alabama pastors have begun receiving their vaccinations this week and sharing their stories.
“I know of quite a few of our ministers who have gotten the vaccine,” said Danette Clifton, director of communications for the United Methodist Conference of North Alabama, which includes more than 600 churches.
Clifton said that while it has not been widely publicized, clergy have been categorized as frontline critical workers as part of allocation phase 1B in the state vaccination allocation plan. They are specifically mentioned in a footnote to Phase 1B, along with school teachers, child care workers and grocery store workers. ....

Man, 34, killed in Blount County crash

BLOUNT COUNTY A two-vehicle crash in Blount County at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, has claimed the life of a Hanceville man, according to Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey of the Alabama State Troopers Office.
“Byron Holland Smith, 34, was fatally injured when the 2016 Ford Escape he was driving crossed the centerline and collided with a 2020 Mack tractor-trailer,” Bailey said in a statement released Wednesday. “Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The driver of the tractor- trailer was injured and was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The crash occurred on U.S. 278 near Hipp Road, approximately seven miles east of Blountsville. No further information is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate. ....
