Heatwave Challenged Some Of SVDP's Homeless Services, Now They're Preparing For The Future

Director of Homeless and Emergency Services Roxann O’Brien says they’ve since fixed equipment and are addressing other issues that came up during the heatwave. More than 100 people are suspected to have died becuase of the heatwave in Oregon.

SVDP learned Pallet Shelters couldn t withstand hot temperatures without A/C units. O Brien said they re now adding units to shelters for use during the summer.

For example, O Brien said Pallet Shelters, which are small stand up structures, are now being outfitted with A/C units because the shelters couldn t handle the heat. SVDP also plans to build outdoor coverage for their refrigeration units to keep compressors out of direct sunlight. ....

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) A solution to shelter the homeless is being constructed with urgency in North Hollywood.
It s a crisis of human rights, it s a crisis of public health, says Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian.
Krekorian represents the city s 2nd district, where the village of tiny homes is being built off Laurel Canyon Boulevard and the 170 Freeway. It s a site that s surrounded by homeless encampments and shuttered businesses.
The shelter project is a partnership with Pallet Shelters and the L.A. Conservation Corps. Corpsmembers are helping to build 425 new shelters across the city of Los Angeles. The North Hollywood site includes 103 shelters. ....

Dawn To Dawn Opens Pallet Shelters For PeaceHealth Patients

KLCC s Brian Bull reports on five new units available for unhoused people discharged from hospitals and ERs.
Through a partnership between St. Vincent de Paul and Peacehealth, five Pallet shelters have been specifically set up at the Dawn to Dawn site off of Highway 99 North. The small structures were built with a $74,000 grant from the health organization. The purchase of the shelters themselves were paid for by Lane County through the federal CARES Act and made available (through a no-cost lease) to St. Vincents and other agencies that serve the unhoused population.
The interior of each 64-square-foot shelter includes lighting and heating, shelving and storage space beneath the bed. ....
