Bucks New University’s Vice Chancellor has urged the UK government to allow all students to return - arguing they have been “left in limbo”.
Professor Nick Braisby has criticised the government for leaving thousands of students without a clear return date to university following the latest roadmap announcement this week.
On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave the green light for stage two of his government’s roadmap, allowing all shops, hairdressers, gyms, spas, and theme parks to reopen.
Self-catering accommodation is also be allowed to reopen - but there was no mention of when university students could resume their studies in Covid-safe university facilities. ....

Greenwich University writes to MPs over return of students

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich has written to a collection of local MPs urging them to help provide clarity as to when campuses will be allowed to reopen.
Professor Jane Harrington has addressed a letter to local south east London MPs asking why no date has been given for the majority of students to return to campus, despite them being Covid-safe and large swathes of sectors reopening.
The university described how staff and students had been eagerly awaiting the Prime Minister s roadmap announcement on Easter Monday, but were left disappointed by a lack of any information relevant to them. ....

Students 'pushed to the brink' must be compensated, say MPs and campaigners


MINISTERS are under increasing pressure to compensate university students for the educational and financial losses forced on them during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Campaigners spoke of students being “pushed to the brink” by the government’s mishandling of the crisis, as opposition MPs sought a rapid review with the power to recommend compensation.
The Department for Education has confirmed that students in England will not be allowed to return to in-person lessons before May 17, by which time most courses will have already finished.
Responding to an urgent question today, Universities Minister Michelle Donelan told the Commons that nearly a quarter of students – some half a million – were yet to return to their term-time accommodation. ....
