American higher education is full of jargon. We have all kinds of bamboozling lingo to categorize different types of colleges: SLACs, HBCUs, R1s, MSIs, PWIs, “mega-universities” the list goes on. While many of these terms are helpful, others are less so. Consider, for instance, “elite” colleges. This term suggests everyone has agreed on which institutions are “elite” and what their features might be. That, of course, is not the case. Another misfire, somewhere near the top of this pantheon of parlance, is “flagship.” ....

Naval Community College Kicks Off Pilot Program This Month With 600 Students

The United States Naval Community College will begin serving its first class of about 600 students, under a pilot program running from January through June.
The students will come from the Navy, Marine Corps and the Coast Guard, and they will be taught by a combined effort from Northern Virginia Community College, the University of Arizona, the University of Maryland Global Campus, Alexandria Technical and Community College in Minnesota, and the State University System of New York (SUNY Online). ....

USNCC Pilot Program Set to Launch January 2021

The newly established United States Naval Community College (USNCC) is launching a pilot program this month with nearly 600 students from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard participating in the first phase of the program, serving as a template for future USNCC students.
Northern Virginia Community College, the University of Arizona, the University of Maryland Global Campus, Alexandria Technical and Community College, and the State University System of New York (SUNY Online), are paired to offer world-class education to Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen as part of the pilot program scheduled for January through June of 2021.
“We are very excited to make this announcement,” said Dr. Randi Cosentino, president of the USNCC. “We are working with top colleges and universities to bring to the members of our maritime service community programs that are going to be of high value to them and help them achieve their educational goals.” ....

The United States Naval Community College pilot program is underway.
Almost 600 students from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are participating in the pilot program, which has been in the works since 2019, when the Navy announced that it was unveiling an “Education for Seapower” campaign to enhance the service’s intellectual advancement. ....
