Study: Blood oxygen detection device gives Black people inaccurate readings more often

A medical device that measures oxygen blood levels is more likely to give misleading or inaccurate results to Black patients, according to research published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Researchers analyzed data from thousands of adult patients who received supplemental oxygen at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, comparing the data to that of 37,000 patients at about 200 other hospitals’ intensive care units.
The finger-worn pulse oximeter, they found, was more likely to return inaccurate results for Black users based on comparisons of the data to a test that takes arterial blood samples.

In the University of Michigan cohort, among the patients who had an oxygen saturation of 92 to 96 percent on pulse oximetry, an arterial oxygen saturation of less than 88 percent was found in 88 of 749 arterial blood gas measurements in Black patients and in 99 of 2,778 measurements in white patients, the study ....

Sheriff: Orion Township man charged in assault of his child's mother

An Orion Township man has been charged in the Saturday assault of a woman that left her in critical condition, the Oakland County Sheriff s Office said.
Christian Depaul Roberson, 31, was charged Tuesday in 52-3 District Court with assault with intent to do great bodily harm-less than murder or by strangulation, a 10-year felony. A magistrate ordered him held on a $300,000 bond and scheduled his next court date for next Tuesday.
According to the sheriff s office, deputies were called Saturday to a location in the 4700 block of Georgia Drive near Baldwin and Morgan roads for a report of a severely injured woman. ....

ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An Orion Township man is facing criminal charges after severely injuring the mother of his child. The victim is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
According to police, the assault happened at a home in the 4700 block of Georgia Drive in Orion Township on Dec. 12.
The woman walked to a neighbor’s house seeking help for severe injuries and told them her 3-month-old baby had been taken by the child’s father Christian Depaul Roberson, 31, of Orion Township after she was attacked and beaten at the home. ....

DETROIT – The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 442,715 as of Tuesday, including 10,935 deaths, state officials report.
New COVID-19 cases are slowing but deaths continue to rise in Michigan. Testing has remained steady, with more than 45,000 diagnostic tests reported per day, with the positive rate decreasing to near 11% over the last week. Hospitalizations have slowed but remain relatively high, including upticks in critical care and ventilator use.

Michigan’s 7-day moving average for daily cases was 4,800 on Monday, the lowest in four weeks. The 7-day death average was 107, the highest since April. The state’s fatality rate is 2.5%. The state also reports “active cases,” which were listed at 190,000 on Monday. ....
