Bungalow demolition and two-house replacement approved
A bungalow in Caversham will be demolished and replaced with two houses despite concerns from neighbours about size and character.
Plans to demolish the bungalow at 16 Richmond Road and build two four-bed houses in its place were approved by Reading Borough Council (RBC) officers on June 30.
Neighbours had raised concern about the land being too small for two houses, a loss of privacy and the designs being out of character. ....

How the University of Reading has welcomed back students


Campus cafes and bars have also reopened for indoor service.

Currently, around three quarters of students in halls of residence are currently on campus.
The UoR is unsure how many students are back in their private accommodation but they estimate that about 75 per cent of students are now in Reading.
In order to keep students and staff safe, there are measures in place for people to follow on campus.
Face coverings must be worn inside buildings and communal spaces like in cafes, bars and the library.
One-way systems are also in place in buildings with social distancing measures and hand sanitisers in place. ....

DANGEROUS blood clotting in patients with Covid-19 may be treatable, thanks to research from scientists at the University of Reading (UoR).
Ongoing research by Professor Jon Gibbins and a team of experts in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research, looks at how Covid-19 is leading to dangerous blood clots in the lungs.
In two studies, Prof Gibbins and the team have begun to identify how the human body’s own immune response to fight Covid-19 in the form of antibody production is leading to blood clot formation.
When these clots, called thrombosis, happen in the lungs it leads to significant damage in patients. ....

University of Reading rejects union's request to refund tuition fees


University of Reading
The University of Reading (UoR) has rejected a request to refund part of students tuition fees for this year.
The Reading University Students’ Union had written an open letter asking the university to refund some of students tuition fees during this turbulent year.
It said the disruption to the student community has been “extraordinary in nature, such as two national lockdowns, disruption of teaching and learning, lack of face to face lectures and a significantly impacted in-person student activities” and called for an “extraordinary response”.
UoR vice-chancellor professor Robert Van de Noort responded on Tuesday, saying the university will not refund any tuition fees. ....
