The beginning of warm weather marks the beginning of hurricane season, officially
June 1-Nov. 20 for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. In 2020, a record-breaking
two tropical storms and three hurricanes hit Louisiana.

After an overly active 2020 season, the weathermen are predicting another very active
hurricane season. A proactive approach may be the best defense against emergencies

The University of Louisiana Monroe Gerontology program is hosting the 2021 Ageless
Women’s Leadership Summit: Voices of Experience, from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.

Registration is required by emailing Anita Sharma, Ph.D., Gerontology program director,
at asharma@ulm.edu. Log-in information will be emailed to registrants.

Sharma plans to make the summit an annual event. She said it is essential to provide

The free seminar, “When Love Hurts: Elder Abuse by Trusted People,” is organized by
Anita Sharma, Ph.D., ULM Gerontology program director.
Speakers with the state Elderly Protective Services and Louisiana Ombudsman Program
will present case histories and reporting guidelines.
Topics will cover different types of abuse, including domestic violence, abuse in
institutional settings, and abuse by trusted people who may not be family members.
