Looking back at the council climate committee's first year | News, Sports, Jobs

KELLY KING
I thank my colleagues on the Maui County Council for having the vision to create the Climate Action and Resilience Committee just about a year ago and, just as important, helping the committee pass several landmark initiatives throughout 2020.
On July 15, the committee received a presentation on the ‘Aina Aloha Economic Futures Declaration by University of Hawaii Professor Kamanamaikalani Beamer. He said the declaration embodies the principles of a circular economy.
According to Professor Beamer, the key aspects of a circular economy are:
• A regenerative and equitable economic system.
• The decoupling of economic growth from environmental degradation.
• Meaningful work while rejuvenating the environment. ....

The Complicated Truth of Climate Change in the Marshall Islands
Not all islands are sinking. We can fight global warming while acknowledging the wonder of the natural world.

Tidal water in Majuro Atoll
In 2011, as an anxious Republican from Utah, I fly with my husband and nine-month-old son to Majuro Atoll, the capital of the Marshall Islands. We fly D.C. to L.A., L.A. to Honolulu, then Honolulu southwest for 2,300 miles to Majuro. I don’t blink at the carbon footprint of my flights, not yet. I’m just grateful the baby sleeps, log-like, on a questionably hygienic hearth of two airline tray tables. I’m worried about the unknowns ahead, disasters to foresee and forestall: feral dogs, garbage pollution, disease, food insecurity, droughts, floods, typhoons, leftover nuclear radiation, and, of course, sharks. I don’t consider these potential issues in terms of their likelihood, scope, or scale. My mind races. ....

Swabbing for cells left in the 17-inch bite marks on a surfboard, researchers tapped into new DNA technology to determine that a 14-foot tiger shark was behind the fatal attack on 56-year-old Napili man in Honolua Bay this month.
Lead researcher and renowned shark expert Carl Meyer said that in the past, scientists have had to rely on observations by the victims or bystanders to help identify the shark in an attack. In Hawaii, the species goes unidentified in about 40 percent of incidents. ....
