MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Following an executive order signed by Gov. Tim Walz ending the statewide mask mandate, the University of Minnesota has lifted their mask requirement for fully vaccinated students and staff.
In a letter penned Friday afternoon, University President Joan Gabel said the new policy would apply to all university buildings, venues, and outdoor spaces. However, health clinics will still require masks and unvaccinated people are still expected to wear masks indoors.
Gabel added that building capacity limits and physical distancing requirements will remain in place until May 28 in accordance with Walz’s rollback timeline. ....

U of M finance leaders provide update and reiterate recommendations to address current fiscal year budget deficit

In an update to the Board of Regents Finance & Operations Committee, University of Minnesota leaders discussed pandemic-related deficits in the current fiscal year and approaches that continue to help the University close budget gaps. Current projections suggest systemwide shortfalls totalling $172.5 million when the fiscal year ends on June 30, a relatively small change to the $166 million in projected deficits shared with the Board last December.

University of Minnesota Board of Regents to meet with Crookston leadership for campus-level strategic plan discussions

In the latest in an ongoing series of campus-level strategic planning conversations, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents will discuss next week how the Crookston campus will advance the University’s systemwide mission. That mission, along with the University’s priorities for the next five years, are outlined in its systemwide strategic plan, MPact 2025, which the Board approved earlier this year.
U of M Crookston Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause and other campus leaders will participate in the discussion, where they will highlight how Crookston uniquely identifies its campus within the larger system.
Part of this identity is tied to career readiness and hands-on learning. While these principles are present throughout the University System, Holz-Clause notes that Crookston invests additional effort in this work, emphasizing the connections of theory, science and research with practical knowledge and learning by experience. ....

U of M outlines measures for student success, innovation, community, MNtersections, and fiscal stewardship commitments

Today, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents took its final steps toward setting the strategic direction of the University when Regents approved a set of metrics they will use to measure University progress.
The measures, which are part of the University’s first ever systemwide strategic plan (MPact 2025) signal how the Board and University President Joan Gabel will work toward achieving the five commitments outlined in MPact 2025. Measures cover topics from the diversity and success rates of students during and following their University education; research growth and rankings; and engagement in industry and other efforts to benefit Minnesota; to metrics that outline expectations for tuition rates and student aid, sustainability and the efficient use of University resources. ....

University of Minnesota receives $5M grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for racial justice in higher education

Executive Vice President and Provost Rachel T.A. Croson announced today that The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the University a $5 million grant to address racial justice and create more just and equitable futures for all through public humanities.
“This statewide initiative deepens the University’s relationships with our diverse communities, with a focus on developing new knowledge, visions and practices for inclusion and justice,” said Croson. “It will enable progress on multiple elements of our Systemwide Strategic Plan, including advancing the arts and humanities through strategic collaborations, strengthening relations with Tribal Nations, and working in partnership with underserved local communities to enhance access to higher education, among other shared goals.” ....
